Description

A striking and highly detailed stick pin from the Edwardian period in the form of a golden eagle. Perched atop a sphere decorated with a band of leaf decoration the majestic bird has outstretched wings and is defined by piercing ruby eyes. A small lustrous pearl is suspended from the beak of the eagle by a polished ring ensuring it will move delicately with the wearer. The pin section has an intricate twisted central section to ensure it will grip perfectly when worn in a lapel or scarf. A highly symbolic animal that was popularly used in jewellery the eagle was known to represent nobility, strength, wisdom, courage and power. In the United States of America, the eagle is the well-known emblem of the nation. The small lustrous pearl likely symbolises purity and wisdom, which resonates strongly with the powerful eagle.Often presented to mark special occasions by relatives and loved ones, stick pins were often sentimental and highly treasured. The Russian Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1917) received countless numbers, which were all meticulously recorded in watercolours in a comprehensive jewel album.
