Description

An intricately detailed gold and enamel stick pin in the form of a jester from the Belle Epoque period. Showcasing lustrous green, red and white enamel decoration the bearded face of the jester gazes at us with a joyous smile. Gaining popularity in 16th-century royal courts the colourful figure of the jester entertained guests during banquets and festivities. Henry VIII was very fond of his court jester Will Sommers who remained in royal service until the reign of Elizabeth I. Often presented to mark special occasions by relatives and loved ones, stick pins were often sentimental and highly treasured. The Russian Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1917) received countless numbers, which were all meticulously recorded in watercolours in a comprehensive jewel album. This example features the French eagle mark for gold.
