Antique Edwardian Ruby Cross Pendant in Platinum

Description

An angled ruby and diamond cross pendant from the Edwardian period. First appearing in jewellery in the late-19th-century the rare dense metal called platinum revolutionised the industry. Free from the constraints of heavy metal mounts to secure weighty diamonds and gemstones, platinum enabled minimal metal work and more intricate designs. Vibrant red carré cut rubies have been Millegrain set to form the centre sections of the main body and arms of the cross. These have been expertly complemented by small old cut diamonds, which sparkle delicately in the light. A central Millegrain set old cut diamond perfectly completes the design. Cross pendants were popular adornments for the fervent Victorians and Edwardians with elaborate diamond and gemstone set examples being coupled with pearl and diamond necklaces. The Edwardian period only lasted for nine years (1901-1910), but it was an incredibly important era for jewellery design. Hugely intricate pieces showcasing the very best diamonds and coloured gemstones were worn with elaborate fashions from the most famous French couture houses.
